This is my attempt to play Winifred Atwell's arrangement of "The Poor People of Paris", composed by Marguerite Monnot and originally entitled "Poor John". As far as I can establish, her arrangement has not been published, and so I have had to do the best I can to work something out from her recorded performances. It has not been easy!

My version of this tune is closely based on a solo piano version Russ Conway recorded. He used a honky-tonk piano at EMI's Abbey Road Studios, but I think it sounds better on a properly tuned grand piano.

Russ Conway composed the song 'Time to Celebrate' for the show 'Mr Venus' - sadly unsuccessful. This is played on a honky-tonk piano prepared in the same way as Russ's recording pianos at EMI's Abbey Road Studios. Russ died in November 2000, so it will soon be 11 years ago. I played this to him on his own piano at his home in Eastbourne. I think he approved.

The first song I ever remember hearing. It was played endlessly in the summer of 1959. I was seven years old. I now know why it was so catchy, with its clever use of off cords etc.
